You Ask, We Answer: Transfer of Tuition Benefits

Staff Senate Frequently Asked Questions

Question:  “Are Mason employees authorized to transfer unused tuition benefits (12 credit hours per year) to family members?”

Answer:  No. The Staff Senate researched this issue in 2016 and learned the Attorney General of Virginia denied this request over 10 years ago due to prohibitions against transferring special employee entitlements, funded by the state, to non-employees. Other institutions in Virginia currently allowing employees to transfer tuition benefits to family members are using non-state funds. Mason’s Staff Senate is now looking into alternative ways to provide tuition assistance to family members of Mason employees through a scholarship program funded by private donations.
