September Staff Senate General Meeting with President Anne Holton

The September Staff Senate general meeting will feature guest speaker Anne Holton, interim president of George Mason University.

The meeting will also feature a brief presentation from Adrienne Bryant Godwin, programming manager, College of Visual and Performing Arts. Adrienne will discuss the upcoming performance season at Center for the Arts and the Hylton Performing Arts Center.

Staff Senate Chair Serving on Presidential Search Committee

On July 26, the Board of Visitors announced the members of the search committee who will help select the next president of George Mason University. Lauren Reuscher, chair of Staff Senate, will serve as a staff representative on the committee.

The committee’s first order of business will be to develop a profile for the position and a timeline for the search.

Lauren also invites staff members to reach out to her directly to share ideas and feedback.

Nominate Your Supervisor for the Outstanding Supervisor Award by August 30!

The Outstanding Supervisor Award, sponsored by the Mason Staff Senate, seeks to recognize supervisors who routinely go above and beyond to provide unparalleled leadership, mentorship, and support within their departments or offices. Outstanding supervisors model and promote a positive work-life balance and strive to serve not only their departments or offices but also their personnel. Other activities that an outstanding supervisor demonstrates include:

  • Acknowledging exemplary performance
  • Supporting innovation and soliciting input from employees
  • Being fair and flexible
  • Encouraging and providing opportunities for professional growth
  • Promoting diversity and inclusion

Research Administration Certificate Program

The Research Administration Certificate Program, developed in collaboration with a cross-campus advisory committee and coordinated through the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), is a professional development opportunity designed to educate staff about sponsored programs administration.  

The curriculum provides a deeper understanding of key concepts related to grant and contract administration. Participants attend 10 sessions, engage in problem-based learning exercises, and other hands-on activities to receive the Research Administration certificate.   

The kick-off session will be held on September 17 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in Merten Hall, Room 1202, and will cover topics including the research and regulatory environment, sponsored projects policies, the life cycle of an award, and an overview of the Office of Sponsored Programs. The requirements of the certificate program will be reviewed, and there will be time for questions and answers.

Virginia529 Presentation

Have you heard about Virginia529 but want to learn more? Check out an information session on September 18 from noon to 1 p.m. in Merten Hall, Room 1204.

At the presentation, you will learn about saving for future higher education expenses for yourself or a loved one.

During this session learn how to:

  • Save for tuition and other college expenses
  • Save for private or religious K-12 education
  • Take advantage of tax-free earnings and the Virginia state tax deduction
  • Meet your savings goals

9/11 Day of Service and Service Fair

Students, alumni, staff, and faculty are invited to participate in the 9/11 Day of Service and Service Fair.

The 7th Annual Day of Service will take place on Wednesday, September 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The service events will provide the opportunity to give back to the local George Mason community. To volunteer for one of the many service projects on campus, visit the registration page.

The Social Action and Integrative Learning (SAIL) Service Fair will take place on Thursday, September 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the SUB I Quad. This is a great way to connect with more than 30 different community partners and leaders and discover opportunities to use your School Assistance and Volunteer Leave!

General information about the 9/11 Day of Service and Service Fair can be found at 911day.gmu.edu.

Up to two hours of volunteer service can be considered work time with your supervisor’s permission. If you would like to volunteer more than two hours, eligible faculty and staff may use school assistance and volunteer hours.
